SURF SCHOOLS DIRECTORY | SurfGirl Magazine – Womens and Girls …
Written By: SurfGirl?on?June 29, 2011 No Comment Summer is here and many minds will be turning to learning to surf or improving while the water is not so baltic. Here?s SurfGirl?s Surf School Map to help you find a surf school near you.
IT?S TIME TO LEARN
Learning from somebody who knows how to do something is one thing. Learning from somebody who is qualified to teach you the correct way to do something is completely different. A good surf coach will share their enthusiasm, their stoke for the sport and you?ll soon realise why they are addicted to it. If you want to learn to surf or improve your shredding, it?s time to get yourself to surf school.

CHALLENGE
What ever anyone says: Surfing is a hard sport. No two ways about it. One of the hardest of them all in fact. Get a gang of reasonably fit people, folk that use the gym regularly, play footie or even swim a lot and watch them learn to surf for a few hours. You?ll see how knackered they quickly become. As it?s one of the few sports in the world where the pitch is constantly moving you?re up against it from the off. Also, to learn you need a fairly chunky board that will offer the stability to learn the basics and of course, balance on. Lugging that bad boy around while hanging out in the white water soon makes you short on puff.
EASY DOES IT
But don?t be put off! By taking a surfing lesson you can learn the right way from the start. Using your energy to learn the correct techniques that will see you get the timing, balance and stance correct in no time. A two hour surf lesson with a decent instructor at a beach with waves that are suitable for your age, size and fitness could save you months of struggling alone. And save you flapping around getting exhausted. It?s a total false economy to save money on not having a surf lesson, only to get dragged around by mates that can surf already who after a few tips are off to catch some waves themselves, leaving you to get pounded.

SAFE AND SOUND
Statistically, surfing is one of the safest sports but learning from a school that has the correct qualifications is still a no brainer. You are looking for a surf school that is recognised by the sports governing body ? Surfing GB. The coaches need to be qualified, insured surf instructors and qualified beach lifeguards.
ALL THE GEAR
The equipment that you use needs to be of a suitable standard. The correct thickness wetsuit for the season and suitable sized surfboards. About as big a board as you can carry for learning. The kit also needs to be in good condition ? a wetsuit full of holes and a surfboard with a broken fin will make a tricky proposition even more challenging.
IT?S NOT A ONE OFF
The common misconception is that you just have a single surfing lesson and then you?re released in to the ocean to fend for yourself. A lesson is just the beginning, from there you should go away and practice your new skills and then go back and learn some more. Then practice and learn from an expert again ? and so it goes on. By taking a series of lessons over a period of time, relevant skills can be passed on to get you past the white water stage and out back with the ?real surfers? double fast. Check out the weekend courses that many surf schools offer, the intensive coaching weekends, all girls courses, specialist move clinics or one to one coaching. This is the sort of thing that has been going on with skiing and snowboarding lessons for years and now surfing has caught up ? so make use of it! It will only make it more fun.
SEASONAL SURFING
The general public is finally coming around to something that surfers have known for a long time now? surfing in the winter isn?t actually that bad. The incredible advancements in wetsuit technology now mean that lots of people take surf lessons outside of the summer. It?s less crowded, the waves are better and if you have the right gear and some where to change it?s no biggie on the cold front either. Plus there is a much higher chance of having the instructor all to yourself in the off season.
