PFT: Brady misses practice with shoulder injury

Divisional Playoffs - New Orleans Saints v San Francisco 49ersGetty Images

Exactly 30 years ago, coach Bill Walsh transformed a perennially mediocre-at-best 49ers franchise into a juggernaut that would capture five Super Bowl titles in 14 seasons.

After 17 years without a return to the NFL title game, one of the key members of Walsh?s 49ers predicts a return to glory under coach Jim Harbaugh.

?I see these guys doing some wonderful things this decade ? I think Jim will do great job of creating another dynasty and winning some Super Bowls,? Craig recently told the San Francisco Chronicle, via NFL.com.? ?I foresee us winning some Super Bowls in the next decade, if not this year then in the years ahead.? Wherever he goes, he wins.? He has the secret sauce, and I?m loving his flavor.?

(Look, it would be way too easy to make a juvenile remark at this point, including but not limited to ?that?s what she said.?? Instead, I?ll just sit here and wonder how close Craig came to calling back Eric Branch of the Chronicle and begging him to pull that last sentence.)

?Jim Harbaugh is an amazing guy, an innovator, amazing coach, a leader,? Craig added.? ?When you get players to buy into your system the way he has, you?re going to have success.?

Amen to that.? We thought Harbaugh would make enough of a difference to win the NFC West, but we never dreamed he?d take the team to a 14-3 record and a berth in the NFC title game, especially since he had only seven weeks to get his team ready.

Some think that Jeff Fisher avoided the Dolphins for fear of competing directly with Bill Belichick and the Patriots.? In the end, Fisher may have wished he picked Belichick as his arch-rival instead of Harbaugh and the 49ers.

(AP) ? New Penn State coach Bill O’Brien is turning his defense over to a veteran, well-traveled assistant with a national title on his resume.

Ted Roof was officially tabbed the Nittany Lions’ defensive coordinator on Friday, leaving Central Florida a month after taking the same position with the Knights.

Roof was named Central Florida’s defensive coordinator Dec. 8 after leaving Auburn following the regular season. He previously spent three seasons as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator, including the 2010 national championship season.

Penn State also announced that South Carolina special teams coordinator John Butler would return to his native Pennsylvania and coach the secondary in Happy Valley.

O’Brien still plans to add a quarterbacks coach to fill his offensive staff. Otherwise, his defensive coaching staff is complete ? and as expected it does not include veteran assistant Tom Bradley from former coach Joe Paterno’s staff.

Bradley, the veteran assistant under former coach Joe Paterno, posted on his Twitter account that he finished packing up his office late Thursday: “Walked out the doors proud with a lot of great memories and friends and a better man.”

An open recruiting contact period begins Saturday, a 16-day window in which the new coaches can try to shore up previous verbal commitments while trying to entice other high school prospects who might be intrigued by Penn State’s new direction under O’Brien. He’s finishing up his duties as offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots and the position coach for star quarterback Tom Brady.

O’Brien has committed to remaining with the Patriots through the NFL playoffs. New England hosts Denver in an AFC divisional game Saturday night.

Roof takes over as Linebacker U’s new lead caretaker after having signed a three-year contract last year with Auburn paying him $500,000 annually. The Tigers finished ninth in rush defense in the 2010 national title season.

But a young unit was 78th in total defense (406 yards per game) and 79th in scoring (29.3 points per game) this past season before he departed for Central Florida.

Roof was also defensive coordinator at Minnesota in 2008, and spent six seasons at Duke. He became the Blue Devils’ head coach in 2003, going 6-45 before departing in 2007. A Georgia Tech graduate, Roof’s coaching career began as a graduate assistant at Alabama in 1987.

O’Brien was offensive coordinator at Duke from 2005-6. O’Brien and Roof were also on the same staff at Georgia Tech from 1995-2001 under George O’Leary, the current head coach at Central Florida.

Butler, who is from Philadelphia, decided to move back to his home state after a year with the Gamecocks. He also coached outside linebackers at South Carolina.

O’Brien retained two veteran assistants under Bradley from the previous staff, defensive line coach Larry Johnson and linebackers coach Ron Vanderlinden. Among the other newcomers to Happy Valley is assistant head coach Stan Hixon, the former receivers coach with the Buffalo Bills.

Bradley, though, won’t be back. Penn State went 1-3 in a tough stretch to finish the season following Paterno’s dismissal on Nov. 9.

Still, Penn State defenses under Bradley were typically one of the best in the Big Ten, if not the country. Bradley worked 33 seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, and even interviewed to become Paterno’s permanent replacement, but his future became cloudy after Penn State tabbed O’Brien on Jan. 7.

In an emotional statement released after O’Brien was formally introduced, Bradley wished Penn State’s new boss well and pledged his full support to the school.

“This is forever my home and forever my family. It is important that we come together to support our players and our university,” Bradley said. “Now is the time to demonstrate that we are ? and always will be ? Penn State.”

Somber Boeheim apologizes after Orange edge Gators

(AP) ? Florida’s Billy Donovan hasn’t won two national championships and been to three Final Fours without knowing a little about the coaching fraternity. So, he certainly can sense when a member of that group is hurting.

Friday night was one of those times.

“I’ve known him since I was playing,” Florida coach Billy Donovan said. “And I feel bad for everybody involved up here. I just told him I’m thinking about him. I’m sure it’s taken a lot out of him.”

It certainly appears to.

On this night, Donovan was referring to his opposition, Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, the embattled 67-year-old Hall of Fame coach who appeared like his normal stoic self on the sideline of the No. 4 Orange’s 72-68 win over the No. 10 Gators at the Carrier Dome.

But in the postgame press conference, as the focus turned toward an intense federal investigation into his program, it was a different story.

Boeheim, suddenly, was visibly emotional and full of regret.

“I believe I misspoke very badly in my response to the allegations that have been made,” a humbled Boeheim said. “I shouldn’t have questioned what the accusers expressed or their motives. I am really sorry that I did that and I regret any harm that I caused.

“It was insensitive to the individuals involved and especially to the overall issue of child abuse.”

The coach returned to the subject of his fired former assistant coach, Bernie Fine, apologizing for his initial remarks involving the men who accused Fine of molestating them as minors. Two of the three men were former Syracuse ballboys. Fine has maintained his innocence.

Boeheim said it was important that he get involved in terms of raising awareness and promised he would.

“I’m going to do everything I can to do that, whether I’m coaching or not coaching,” he said.

Some sex abuse victims’ advocates said Boeheim should resign or be fired for his initial disparaging comments about the accusers. Boeheim said he was acting “out of loyalty.”

“I acted without thinking. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” he said.

As he did at Tuesday’s home win over Eastern Michigan, Boeheim received a warm ovation when he was introduced to a crowd of 24,459. It was the largest on-campus attendance in the nation so far this season, and it included former Syracuse star Carmelo Anthony and former Orange assistant Rob Murphy, in his first year at EMU, in front-row seats.

Throughout this process, it’s been clear that Boeheim has the support of his players, a unit that is now 8-0.

“Coach Boeheim is our father,” Scoop Jardine said. “He’s a big part of this team, a big part of this community. He’s taught me a lot the five years I’ve been here. We play hard for him. We play hard for ourselves.

“It’s our season and we want to protect it.”

So far, so good.

Syracuse breezed to its first seven wins with an average margin of victory of 26 points, but the Gators (5-2), whose only previous loss was by seven at No. 2 Ohio State, figured to provide a stiff challenge and they did in a game that seemed like a midseason encounter in the Big East.

One again, the game was secondary.

“It’s been crazy,” said Matt Roe, a Syracuse star from the late 1980s who does color on radio broadcasts. “Nonstop for 14 days. What am I going to say? I don’t know anything. (Boeheim) is a good man.”

He certainly seemed to have the support of the crowd, as well, especially fans in the jammed student section, where one sign said, “In Boeheim We Trust” and another, “In Jim We Trust.”

As for the game, Brandon Triche had 20 points and Jardine finished with 16 and seven assists for the Orange. Kenny Boynton led Florida with 22 points and Erving Walker had 17.

Neither team led by more than six points in a first half that was tied six times.

Florida, which entered the game shooting 42.9 percent from beyond the arc and was averaging 12 3-pointers a game, went 3 of 14 from long range in the period ? all by Erving Walker ? while the Orange struggled even more, hitting just 1 of 10.

Syracuse still managed to forge ahead at the break, 31-27, behind seven points each from Kris Joseph, Fab Melo and Triche.

After the Orange built a 39-30 lead early in the second, Boynton led the Gators back with three 3s, the last putting Florida back on top 49-46 with 9:19 to go. Triche tied it for the fourth time in the period 11 seconds later with his first 3 of the game.

Jardine fed Joseph for a one-handed slam to break the tie and Jardine’s steal and layup had the Orange up 54-49 with 6:20 to go and the crowd shaking the Carrier Dome.

The roar reached another crescendo when Jardine hit a runner in the lane as the shot clock neared zero, Joseph fed C.J. Fair for a baseline jumper, and Jardine hit a 3 from the left wing in a span of 2:19.

That gave Syracuse a 61-53 lead with 3:52 left and the Gators couldn’t rally back.

Top Ten Things You Would Never Hear a Coach Say (or then again …

Published by under neat stuff

When coaching, it?s all about the client, be that as a professional coach, or a line manager/business owner using coaching skills in their own business, with their own people. But it?s so easy sometimes to turn the tables and be the client..oh, so easy?:-)

  1. Let Me Tell You About My Day

Coaching is about the client and NOT about the coach, usually. Sometimes a coaching experience might be worth a share if a coachee is stuck ? but not usually. It?s all about them ? not you. Honour that.

  2. Well, You?re Just Useless Aren?t You!

It?s bad enough to criticise them for their past ? but this reinforces their own self-doubt about their future. You have even taken away their hope for goodness sakes. A coach?s role is to enable potential and open the client?s eyes to possibilities. Not slam it shut.

  3. You Think You?ve Got Problems ? Well, Let Me Tell You?

OK, so you?ve got some issues you are facing yourself. Sorry about that. In a coaching context, you are there to support and grow the client ? not devalue what is truly on their mind, by filling it up with your issues. You can share them ? but on your time, not theirs.

  4. What I?d Do is This?

Now this is very tempting ? and sometimes (?Stop coaching me for a minute, throw me a rope!?) it might, just might be acceptable ? yes, I have done it myself! But in the main, the coach?s job is to extract the greatness out of the client and then build on their abilities and confidence going forward.

  5. Sit Down and Shut Up, I?ve Got Something to Say

No, we haven?t quite got the hang of this here, have we? Coaching is about listening, more especially, really hearing and asking some challenging questions ? maybe. Even listening is all some clients need ? they process solutions as they talk ? it?s remarkable. So how does the line above help that? Not at all.

  6. Well, You?ve Wasted the Last 20 Years of your Life then Haven?t You?

Spot the mistake here then? Everyone in the world has value, often untapped and often hidden under piles and piles of history and baggage. Your job is to help them rise above it ? NOT to stick another six of the best Samsonite?s on the top!

  7. Excuse Me if I Just Check my E-mail While You?re Talking

Ever done two things at once? In the case of a coaching relationship, trust and focus are vital to build the relationship. If you are doing something else when talking to the client, you are not giving your full attention, whether the discussion is on the phone or face to face. Make sure there are no interruptions or distractions.

  8. I?m Not Interested in What?s Causing the Problem ? Let?s Just Fix it Fast

You could do this?but where will they come next time for a solution. Yes, to you. So when will this stop? When can you get on with your own job? When you take the time to build their ability to solve their own problems ? that?s when. It requires questions and a ?blame-free? culture. And it requires a coaching style.

  9. I?ll Tell You What Your Problem is?

Go on then, do it. This takes a punch at what their weaknesses are and not their strengths. People already know where their weaknesses are, believe me. Coaches build on strengths and leverage them to cope with areas that the client finds more challenging.

  10. Can I Call You for a Date?

Just for fun this one. But with a serious side. It is challenging to have a professional relationship and have other things on your mind. It is quite hard to be very objective if there are other distractions ? so take care in this area. Though coaching in Starbucks would be my idea of bliss! Oh, yes ? and according to the International Coach Federation, quite understandably, it?s unethical.

The constructive way to use this is to take the opposite courses of action to those listed ? then you will have the foundation of a valuable coaching relationship with your client, privately or in your workplace.
