New nanopatterned surfaces could improve the efficiency of power plants and desalination systems

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. The condensation of water is crucial to the operation of most of the powerplants that provide our electricity whether they are fueled by coal, natural gas or nuclear fuel. It is also the key to producing potable water from salty or brackish water. But there are still large gaps in the scientific understanding of exactly how water condenses on the surfaces used to turn steam back into water in a powerplant, or to condense water in an evaporation-based desalination plant.

New research by a team at MIT offers important new insights into how these droplets form, and ways to pattern the collecting surfaces at the nanoscale to encourage droplets to form more rapidly. These insights could enable a new generation of significantly more efficient powerplants and desalination plants, the researchers say.

The new results were published online this month in the journal ACS Nano, a publication of the American Chemical Society, in a paper by MIT mechanical engineering graduate student Nenad Miljkovic, postdoc Ryan Enright and associate professor Evelyn Wang.

Although analysis of condensation mechanisms is an old field, Miljkovic says, it has re-emerged in recent years with the rise of micro- and nanopatterning technologies that shape condensing surfaces to an unprecedented degree. The key property of surfaces that influences droplet-forming behavior is known as “wettability,” which determines whether droplets stand high on a surface like water drops on a hot griddle, or spread out quickly to form a thin film.

It’s a question that’s key to the operation of powerplants, where water is boiled using fossil fuel or the heat of nuclear fission; the resulting steam drives a turbine attached to a dynamo, producing electricity. After exiting the turbine, the steam needs to cool and condense back into liquid water, so it can return to the boiler and begin the process again. (That’s what goes on inside the giant cooling towers seen at powerplants.)

Typically, on a condensing surface, droplets gradually grow larger while adhering to the material through surface tension. Once they get so big that gravity overcomes the surface tension holding them in place, they rain down into a container below. But it turns out there are ways to get them to fall from the surface and even to “jump” from the surface at much smaller sizes, long before gravity takes over. That reduces the size of the removed droplets and makes the resulting transfer of heat much more efficient, Miljkovic says.

One mechanism is a surface pattern that encourages adjacent droplets to merge together. As they do so, energy is released, which “causes a recoil from the surface, and droplets will actually jump off,” Miljkovic says. That mechanism has been observed before, he notes, but the new work “adds a new chapter to the story. Few researchers have looked at the growth of the droplets prior to the jumping in detail.”

That’s important because even if the jumping effect allows droplets to leave the surface faster than they would otherwise, if their growth lags, you might actually reduce efficiency. In other words, it’s not just the size of the droplet when it gets released that matters, but also how fast it grows to that size.

“This has not been identified before,” Miljkovic says. And in many cases, the team found, “you think you’re getting enhanced heat transfer, but you’re actually getting worse heat transfer.”

In previous research, “heat transfer has not been explicitly measured,” he says, because it’s difficult to measure and the field of condensation with surface patterning is still fairly young. By incorporating measurements of droplet growth rates and heat transfer into their computer models, the MIT team was able to compare a variety of approaches to the surface patterning and find those that actually provided the most efficient transfer of heat.

One approach has been to create a forest of tiny pillars on the surface: Droplets tend to sit on top of the pillars while only locally wetting the surface rather than wetting the whole surface, minimizing the area of contact and facilitating easier release. But the exact sizes, spacing, width-to-height ratios and nanoscale roughness of the pillars can make a big difference in how well they work, the team found.

“We showed that our surfaces improved heat transfer up to 71 percent [compared to flat, non-wetting surfaces currently used only in high-efficiency condenser systems] if you tailor them properly,” Miljkovic says. With more work to explore variations in surface patterns, it should be possible to improve even further, he says.

The enhanced efficiency could also improve the rate of water production in plants that produce drinking water from seawater, or even in proposed new solar-power systems that rely on maximizing evaporator (solar collector) surface area and minimizing condenser (heat exchanger) surface area to increase the overall efficiency of solar-energy collection. A similar system could improve heat removal in computer chips, which is often based on internal evaporation and recondensation of a heat-transfer liquid through a device called a heat pipe.

The next step in the research, underway now, is to extend the findings from the droplet experiments and computer modeling and to find even more efficient configurations and ways of manufacturing them rapidly and inexpensively on an industrial scale, Miljkovic says.

Building Plans Tips To Make Home Improvement Projects Seem Easy

Published by under neat stuff

Posted By ShoatsVielhauer355 on February 1, 2012

Building plans are in everyone?s minds again as the spring season approaches.

On big home improvement projects, homeowners must take information from contractors wisely. It is not uncommon for unscrupulous contractors to mislead homeowners who are not involved in the process or are easily intimidated. When a contractor mentions a problem or issue, a homeowner should verify it or get a second opinion before paying the contractor additional money or allowing construction to run longer than initially scheduled. Specifically ask them if they employ a qualified architect to produce building plans.

Be certain that you protect all surfaces by covering them, no matter what project you are doing. If you protect them from paint or scratches, you are saving yourself work in the long run. Some specific areas to keep in mind are freshly painted walls, light fixtures, carpeting and sensitive hard floors.

Ensure that there are no low-lying areas, and make sure doubly sure there are none near your home?s foundation. Soil should be added to these areas to stop pooled water from eating away at your yard. Water that collects and seeps through the ground near your foundation can cause cracks that can be very expensive to fix.

Before deciding on a project, determine what improvements would be most valuable based on your location. In a balmy coastal region, installing air conditioning would carry more importance than adding a fireplace. An outdoor swimming pool will add a lot of value to a home in southern California, Arizona or Florida. A pool is not useful during most months in states that are known for cold weather.

Interested in doing a little updating? When you want to personalize your space you can use things you already own to inspire you. Frames should match the decor style you have.

When you are working outside in the heat, sometimes time slips away. Just as it is important to think about your safety when you work, it is also important to remember to stay hydrated on a sweltering day. Be sure to take a break from the manual labor to drink some water and enjoy the work you have accomplished.

Upgrading your appliances goes a long way in improving the overall quality and value of your home. Whatever your situation, home improvement encompasses upgrading your appliances.

Use high-quality insulation around your plumbing system to prevent your water from freezing during this coming winter. Any hardware store will have a selection of foam insulation and other products to help you easily cover your pipes and protect them from the cold. Together, this will keep your water-flow safe and secure. Safe plumbing is vital in the months of winter, because lacking it can result in your pipes cracking or bursting open from the temperatures.

Make sure you have all required safety gear that you need for heavier projects. You want to have gear, like a helmet and back harness. These are but some of the essential items you should have just in case any falling objects come your way.

Keeping safety in mind is important for any home improvement work you do. When you take safety precautions, you can be relatively certain that you will not be hurt and your home will not be harmed. Make sure that you have read all instructions and tutorials before you start any renovation project.

Turning off the water is important when you are working to improve your kitchen or bathroom. Before you start working, locate the shutoff when you working around your house?s water supply or pipes. By doing this, you are making sure that you do not get a flood.

Improve water efficiency while improving your home. Try to put in a toilet with low-flow, a good water heater and a water saving shower head. In addition to being earth-friendly, these projects will increase the value of your home and lower your water bill.

You can make a small niche or alcove really pop by using colorful paint or wallpaper to cover the back surface of the inlaid area. If it?s an especially small niche, you can just use a sample container of paint, so there?s no need to buy a whole gallon.

Seal off the crack that mice are entering into, try steel wool. Mice are unable to chew through steel wool; therefore, it will prevent them from entering.

By starting with various small do-it-yourself projects, the homeowner can build up their confidence to the point they will be ready to tackle the more challenging project. This is a very good thing. Learning a little about home improvement goes a long way. It helps a person build the confidence to take on even more complex projects and increases the resale value of the home. Do not forget that some building plans need planning permission and other do not so it is better to check with the local council first.

DNA in a Cup of Water Reveals Lake Denizens

Published by under neat stuff

Freshwater habitat dwellers can be detected and quantified based on DNA obtained directly from small water samples. Sophie Bushwick reports

More 60-Second Science

To monitor the biodiversity of a freshwater habitat, you could camp out by the water and count the rare wildlife. Or you could just scoop up a cup of water. A new Dutch study has found that the DNA traces in a small sample of a body of water can reveal the species that live in it. The work is in the journal Molecular Ecology. [Philip Francis Thomsen et al., "Monitoring endangered freshwater biodiversity using environmental DNA"]

As animals swim through a lake, they leave behind traces of DNA. The more individuals of a particular species, the more DNA of that species will be shed. And be available to be measured.

The researchers tested about 100 European lakes and streams, comparing the DNA evidence to traditional fauna observations. And the small-sample technique enabled them to correctly identify the species and the sizes of their populations.?

Measuring biodiversity is an important part of protecting endangered species. This quick and easy method of snagging a water sample, which can be tested at a lab miles away from the site, could refresh the process of species monitoring.

Flash floods kill at least 450 in Philippines (AP)

Published by under neat stuff

MANILA, Philippines ? Flash floods devastated a southern Philippine region unaccustomed to serious storms, killing at least 450 people as they slept and turning two coastal cities into muddy waterways strewn with overturned vehicles and toppled trees.

With nearly 300 people missing, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and top military officials were to fly to the worst-hit city of Cagayan de Oro on Sunday to help oversee search-and-rescue efforts and deal with thousands of displaced villagers, as the weather began to clear and floodwaters receded. Among the items urgently needed are coffins and body bags, said Benito Ramos, who heads the government’s disaster-response agency.

“It’s overwhelming. We didn’t expect these many dead,” Ramos said.

Army officers reported unidentified bodies piled up in morgues in Cagayan de Oro city, where electricity was restored in some areas, although the city of more than 500,000 people remained without tap water.

Most of the victims were asleep Friday night when raging floodwaters cascaded from the mountains after 12 hours of rain from a late-season tropical storm in the southern Mindanao region. The region is unaccustomed to the typhoons that are common elsewhere in the archipelago.

Ayi Hernandez, a former congressman, said he and his family were resting in their home in Cagayan de Oro late Friday when they heard a loud “swooshing sound” and water quickly rose ankle-deep inside. He decided to evacuate to a neighbor’s two-story house.

“It was a good thing, because in less than an hour the water rose to about 11 feet (3.3 meters),” filling his home up to the ceiling, he said.

At least 450 people were killed in the floods, Philippine Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang and other officials said. At least 229 died in Cagayan de Oro and 144 in nearby Iligan, which has more than 300,000 residents. The rest died in several other southern and central provinces, Pang said.

Many of the bodies were unclaimed after nearly 24 hours, suggesting that entire families had died, she said.

The Office of Civil Defense said 274 people were missing, but Ramos said the number would likely rise as more field reports come in. So far, 437 people have been rescued.

Cagayan de Oro and Iligan were filled with scenes of destruction and desperation.

A swollen river sent floodwaters gushing through neighborhoods that do not usually experience flooding. A man floated in an inner tube in muddy water littered with plastic buckets, pieces of wood and other debris. Ten people in one home stood on a sloping roof, waiting for rescuers even as water still flooded the lower floors.

Local television footage showed muddy water rushing in the streets, sweeping away all sorts of debris. Thick layers of mud coated streets where the waters had subsided. One car was thrown over a concrete fence and others were crushed and piled in a flooded canal.

Ramos attributed the high casualties in Mindanao “partly to the complacency of people because they are not in the usual path of storms” despite four days of warnings by officials that one was approaching.

Thousands of soldiers backed up by hundreds of local police, reservists, coast guard officers and civilian volunteers were mobilized for rescue efforts, but they were hampered by the flooded-out roads and lack of electricity.

The missing included prominent Filipino radio broadcaster Enie Alsonado, who was swept away while trying to save his neighbors, Iligan Mayor Lawrence Cruz said.

Authorities recovered bodies from the mud after the water subsided. Parts of concrete walls and roofs, toppled vehicles and other debris littered the streets.

Rescuers in boats rushed offshore to save people swept out to sea. In Misamis Oriental province, 60 people were plucked from the ocean off El Salvador city, about six miles (10 kilometers) northwest of Cagayan de Oro, said disaster official Teddy Sabuga-a.

Cruz said the Philippine coast guard and other rescuers were scouring the waters off Iligan for survivors or bodies that may have been swept away to sea.

In just 12 hours, Tropical Storm Washi dumped more than a month of average rains on Mindanao. The storm hit the western province of Palawan on Sunday and was expected to blow out of the country into the South China Sea later in the day.

Forecaster Leny Ruiz said records show that storms that follow the same path as Washi come only once in about every 12 years.

Palawan officials said mobilized emergency crews were on standby as the storm approached.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a statement that the Obama administration offered its “deepest condolences” for the devastation in the southern Philippines.

“The U.S. government stands ready to assist Philippine authorities as they respond to this tragedy,” the statement said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected.”

Death toll in Philippine floods rises to 436 (AP)

Published by under neat stuff

MANILA, Philippines ? Pounding rain from a tropical storm swelled rivers and sent walls of water crushing into two southern Philippine cities in the thick of night, killing at least 436 people, many caught in their beds, officials said Saturday.

Philippine Red Cross Secretary General Gwen Pang told The Associated Press that the latest toll was based on a body count in funeral parlors. She said that 215 died in Cagayan de Oro and 144 in nearby Iligan, and the rest in several other southern and central provinces.

Most of the dead were asleep Friday night when raging floodwaters tore through their homes from swollen rivers and cascaded from mountain slopes following 12 hours of pounding rain in the southern Mindanao region. The region is unaccustomed to the typhoons that are common elsewhere in the archipelago nation.

Many of the bodies in parlors were unclaimed, indicating that entire families had perished, Pang said.

The number of missing was unclear Saturday night. Before the latest Red Cross figures, military spokesman Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang said about 250 people were still unaccounted for in Iligan.

Thousands of soldiers backed up by hundreds of local police, reservists, coast guard officers and civilian volunteers were mobilized for rescue efforts and to clean up after the massive deluge that left the two coastal cities strewn with debris, trash, overturned vehicles and toppled trees.

Many roads were cut off and there was no electricity, hampering relief efforts.

Some of the dead were swept out to sea from Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, which are intersected by rivers and flanked by mountains.

Chief of the government’s Civil Defense Office Benito Ramos attributed the high casualties in Mindanao “partly to the complacency of people because they are not in the usual path of storms” despite four days of warnings by officials that one was approaching.

Ayi Hernandez, a former congressman, said he and his family were resting in their home late Friday when they heard a loud “swooshing sound” and water quickly rose ankle deep inside his home. He decided to evacuate to a neighbor’s two-story house.

“It was a good thing because in less than an hour the water rose to about 11 feet (3.3 meters),” the height of the ceiling of his house, he said.

A man in Cagayan de Oro said he heard a cry for help around 10 p.m. while the floodwaters were still low.

“Suddenly, there was a very strong rush of water,” the man, who was not identified, told a local TV station.

The floodwaters were waist-high in some neighborhoods that do not usually experience flooding. Scores of residents escaped the floods by climbing onto the roofs of their homes, Iligan Mayor Lawrence Cruz said.

Those missing included prominent radio broadcaster Enie Alsonado, who was swept away while trying to save his neighbors, Cruz said.

Rep. Rufus Rodriguez of Cagayan de Oro said that about 20,000 residents of the city had been affected and that evacuees were packed in temporary shelters.

Television footage showed muddy water rushing in the streets, sweeping away all sorts of debris. Thick layers of mud coated streets where the waters had subsided. One car was shown to have been carried over a concrete fence.

Authorities recovered bodies from the mud after the water subsided. Parts of concrete walls and roofs, toppled vehicles and other debris littered the streets.

Rescuers in boats rushed offshore to save people swept out to sea. In Misamis Oriental province, 60 people were plucked from the ocean off El Salvador city, about 6 miles (10 kilometers) northwest of Cagayan de Oro, said disaster official Teddy Sabuga-a.

About 120 more were rescued off Opol township, closer to the city, he added.

Cruz said the coast guard and other rescuers were scouring the waters off Iligan for survivors or bodies that may have been swept away.

Tropical Storm Washi dumped on Mindanao more than a month of average rains in just 12 hours.

It quickly cut across the region overnight and headed for Palawan province southwest of Manila on Saturday night.

Forecaster Leny Ruiz said that the records show that storms that follow Washi’s track come only once in about 12 years.

Lucilo Bayron, vice mayor of Puerto Princesa in Palawan, said he already mobilized emergency crews but local officials have not ordered an evacuation yet because the weather was still fine.

Rare species make home in Broads

Published by under neat stuff

A quarter of the UK’s rarest plants and animals are found in the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, according to a survey.

The University of East Anglia (UEA) researchers believe it is the highest concentration of such species found in one area, including some that do not appear anywhere else in Britain.

But they also identified more than 60 species now considered extinct.

The findings will be used to help protect wetland habitats that could be vulnerable to future climate changes.

Andrea Kelly, an ecologist with the Broads Authority which manages the wetlands and commissioned the study, said even the experts were surprised at the diversity they found.

“We’ve always known that the Broads is an absolute wildlife hotspot but we were blown away by the amount of species.

“We’ve got over 11,000 species in the Broads and so many of those, over 1,500, are rare – and many of those, if the Broads didn’t exist, wouldn’t be here.

“So the Broads is a very special place and has so many rare species,” she said.

‘Vulnerable’

The research carried out by UEA is believed to be the first complete audit of exactly what lives in the Broads. It combined the most recent data with other uncollated records dating back to the 17th Century.

Some of the rare species found in the area, such as the swallowtail butterfly, are well documented.

But hundreds more species thought to be there haven’t been recorded in over two decades – a sign they could have disappeared.

One of the researchers, Dr Hannah Mossman, said many of the animals living in the Broads were at risk and could be particularly affected by any future changes in sea levels.

“Very few of them are able to tolerate changes in salinity. They … nearly all require fresh water conditions so they’re very vulnerable to changes in sea level which might cause increases in the salt in the water, ” she said.

“They’re also vulnerable to, potentially, to drying out if we have dry autumns and dry winters, and they’re vulnerable to higher temperatures in the summer potentially as well.”

The study also found some species had recovered in number in recent years including the crane, otter, bittern and marsh harrier.

The fen raft spider has recently been reintroduced to the Suffolk Broads and the fen mason wasp, which was formerly regarded as extinct in Britain, was rediscovered in the Norfolk Broads in 1986.

Although the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads make up only 0.4% of the UK, Ms Kelly said there were a number of reasons why it was home to so much wildlife.

“Factors include the presence of water, with large rivers flowing to the sea, and the wet peat soils. Water is a provider of life, the ditches, pools, lakes and fens are the places that wildlife seeks out,” she said.

“The important thing, though, is people. People have been managing the Broads for centuries, digging peat, cutting reed beds, digging drains, managing water levels and creating places for wildlife.”
