Taiwan voters face tight election, but keep typical rowdiness in check (+video)

Published by under neat stuff

As Taiwan prepares to go to the polls on Saturday, almost three decades of democracy may have rubbed the shine off some of its novelty ? and instability.?

Today, as Taiwan prepared to go to the polls for tomorrow’s ultra-tight presidential election, police kept a watchful eye on a handful of antigovernment protesters staked out in front of the ruling party?s cavernous 2012 campaign headquarters in anticipation of a news conference by the president.?

It past elections, it was common for angry street demonstrations to swell above 100,000 people ahead of votes in Taiwan, which was under authoritarian until the late 1980s.

But the 2012 campaign is calmer than those in the past, despite the tight race.?After four presidential races and local elections somewhere on the island almost every year, the Taiwanese have gotten used to the democratic process.

?It’s certainly more sedate than in previous years,? says Michael Turton, an American-born politics blogger based in central Taiwan. ?We’re in our third decade of real elections. They are normal, not novelties.?

Before the presidential race in 2004, a bullet grazed incumbent Chen Shui-bian, who went on to win. In 2010, a gunman shot and wounded the son of former-vice president Lien Chan at a city council campaign event near Taipei. Another man was killed.

But now the banners, the protest, and the news conference have become common features of Taiwan?s vibrant democracy. They can be seen all year, any year. And this week they were a mere blip on Taipei?s broader landscape of traffic snarls, lunch-hour lines at dumpling shacks, and folks running errands before the Lunar New Year holiday begins on Jan. 23.

Incumbent President Ma Ying-jeou and his main rival, Tsai Ing-wen, are the top two candidates. Ms. Tsai is backed by a party that is colder toward Taiwan?s longtime political rival China than Mr. Ma?s. Both are trying to outdo each other this year in their attention to Taiwan?s lower class. The economy has hit speed bumps since 2008 and faces an uncertain 2012.?

Rallies on Sunday afternoon for the two appeared to draw just hard-line supporters, who?cheered on the opposition?s goal of Taiwanese independence from China and the incumbent?s eagerness to engage China. Beijing claims sovereignty over self-ruled Taiwan and insists that the two sides some day be reunified. Relations have improved since 2008 following a rack of new trade deals.?

But swing voters largely stayed home during Ms. Tsai?s street-shaking rock concert and Ma?s thundering speech. The swing contingent, estimated at 20 percent of Taiwan?s potential electorate of 18 million, encompasses first-time voters, undecided voters ? and, like any democracy, people who can afford to just not care.

?The rallies have been pretty cold,? says Lin Chong-pin, strategic studies professor at Tamkang University in Taiwan. ?It may be that the voters are becoming apathetic.?

“Drive,” “Tinker, Tailor” top London critics nominations (Reuters)

Published by under neat stuff

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? The London Film Critics Circle, which this year moved its awards a few weeks earlier so as not to become an awards-season afterthought, has given Tomas Alfredson’s “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” and Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive” the most nominations for its 32nd annual Film Awards.

Both films received six nominations, including Film of the Year, where they will be competing with “The Artist,” “A Separation” and “The Tree of Life.”

In the British Film of the Year category, “Tinker, Tailor” was nominated along with “The Guard,” “Kill List,” “Shame” and “We Need to Talk About Kevin.”

Director of the Year nominees are Refn, Asghar Farhadi for “A Separation,” Michel Hazanavicius for “The Artist,” Terrence Malick for “The Tree of Life” and Lynne Ramsay for “We Need to Talk About Kevin.”

Acting nominations went to a combination of performers in the thick of the Oscar race (George Clooney for “The Descendants,” Jean Dujardin for “The Artist,” Meryl Streep for “The Iron Lady,” Michelle Williams for “My Week With Marilyn”) and those who have been overlooked in the stateside awards so far: Gary Oldman in “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” Anna Paquin in “Margaret,” Michael Smiley in “Kill List.”

The awards are voted by more than 120 critics, broadcasters and writers from the UK, and will be given out at a ceremony in London on January 19. In previous years, they have been given out at a ceremony in mid-February, long after all the other critics groups have announced their winners.

Clay Guida: Anthony Pettis Bout Will Be a Fight of the Year Candidate

Published by under neat stuff

Sandwiched between two UFC pay-per-views and at the start of the busiest stretch of the year in mixed martial arts, Saturday night’s Ultimate Fighter Finale is being somewhat overlooked by MMA fans.

But Clay Guida, who’s fighting Anthony Pettis in the main event on Saturday night, says any fan who misses it is going to miss what may be the single best MMA fight of 2011.

“It’s got fight of the night, fight of the year written all over it,” Guida said on The MMA Hour. “It’s going to be a fun fight for the fans and a fun fight for us.”

Although Guida’s bout with Pettis may be a brawl, he says it’s no grudge match. Guida said he likes Pettis personally and admires the way Pettis approaches the sport, constantly looking to improve himself and bringing new techniques into the cage every time he fights, as he did with his “Showtime Kick” in his last fight, a win over Ben Henderson.

“I’m a fan of his,” Guida said of Pettis. “I love watching him fight. He’s very exciting. He has a high pace. Every time he fights he’s coming up with different things. Besides the kick heard round the world he has lots of tricks in his bag.”

Learning new tricks is part of why Guida moved to New Mexico and began training with a new coach, Greg Jackson. Guida made a football analogy in explaining why he’s thrilled to be training at Jackson’s gym.

“Training with the best guys in the world is only going to improve your game,” Guida said. “Do you want to be coached by Vince Lombardi or Dave Wannstedt? Go to the best guys in the world and you’re going to be one of the best. The first week I was here I realized there’s nothing but hard working animals in the gym.”

If Guida beats Pettis, he might just become the next No. 1 contender in the UFC’s lightweight division — and possibly the next champion from Jackson’s gym. But Guida says he’s not focused on that.

“I’m focused on June 4,” Guida said, “and that’s all I’m thinking about.”
